    Hi Sarah,

You are off on placement with us in January. I’ve just been reading your blog and it’s funny! I’d love to keep track of you and if you continue writing whilst on placement, maybe publish relevant bits of your story on our site. Would you be happy for us to do this?

    Thanks,
    Ruth (Work the World).

Hi Ruth, thank you for commenting!
Absolutely, I plan to continue with my blog for as long as possible and would be more than happy for you to do that! However I am currently having a problem with my university course due to some technical difficulties with an essay, so I am waiting for them to tell me if they will keep me on the course or not (I should be fine but I have the worst luck).
If all goes well then that would be great.

      Many thanks,
      Sarah

    Dear Sarah,

Just a quick note to say that I really enjoyed reading your blog. I too am hoping to study Adult Nursing and am waiting on my reply from uni. I’ve found your blog helpful and informative about the little things people don’t think to tell you and tips.

    Thanks again!

      Dear Hayley,

Thank you so much for your lovely message! It means a lot to me that my blog can help you and any others out there who are thinking of becoming a nurse.
I remember receiving that reply from uni like yesterday… very exciting :D Which university (or universities) have you applied to?
I’ll do my best to carry on thinking of useful tips! Please let me know if there is anything at all that you want to know or that I can help you with – I have added an ‘Ask me a question’ page for anyone who can’t find what they’re looking for on my blog.
Please let me know how you get on and I wish you all the best :)

    Hi Sarah,

I’ve applied to the UEA in Norwich as it’s my local one, really hoping I get accepted on the January 2011 intake or else it’s a wait until Sept 2012! I would love to see a post that details your university schedule when you aren’t on placement, like the different classes/lectures you have and when you have them (when you have time to of course!).

    Take care

    Hello again Hayley,

That is a very good suggestion, I will definitely write a post on the details of the university side of nursing. Will start working on this one after I have submitted a piece of work on Sunday. Thanks!

    Hi, I love your blog!

My name is Laura and I’m in my second year at Manchester Uni (currently at south Manchester hospital) and I’m 23 also :) .

I was reading your experience of a cardiac arrest, as I saw my first one two days ago on intensive care. I then read the one about making drug errors when interrupting a nurse and I immediately thought of the red aprons at south Manchester! Then I read it and realised you are from around here!

    Small world!

Hey Laura thank you for commenting!
Ooh what did you think of seeing your first arrest? How did it make you feel?
Yeah those aprons at South Manchester were amazing. I think we should be able to have those at every hospital so we can ignore EVERYONE while we’re busy playing with drugs :)
How are you finding our course? Are you doing the diploma or degree?

Thank you for your kind words in response to my blog “Return on Investment.” I do hope you will have that conversation with your parents soon. It wasn’t easy to initiate, but one of the smartest things I’ve ever done.

Knowing that even one family will have the same peace of mind if/when faced with end-of-life care makes the time spent writing the blog worthwhile.

PS: seeing the comments about witnessing a first Code reminded me of mine. Pam Lipsett, MD (whom I adore) took one look at me when she arrived to run the Code and said, “Margaret, draw up 10 of Valium; 5 for the patient and 5 for the nurse.” I got it, took a deep breath & stopped shaking. 2 decades later, I still get the adrenaline rush but never loose the focus. –M

Hi Sarah, great blog, well designed and great material :} I’m a student nurse from the UK and have a free access site http://www.graduagent.com for nursing students and professionals, I think you will appreciate all of the free material, eBooks, eJournals, articles, Podcasts, Medical Videos etc. No strings, all free and free access. Enjoy! I will look forward in following your tales, keep up the great work, thanks Howard.

Sarah, I ran across your blog researching and really enjoyed reading it. I’m a current nurse in a transplant ICU in Oklahoma. I’m sure this is very helpful to be able to write out your experiences, etc. I know it probably helps many student nurses out there who feel a little lost. Keep it up! I absolutely love what I do, and think that nursing is an amazing profession. :)

Thank for your lovely comment Rebecca, it means a lot to me! I’m hoping that my blog is giving enough information in time for students who will begin studying nursing next month.
A transplant ICU – that sounds incredible. I hope that I am able to work in acute care one day too :)
I agree, nursing is an amazing profession, and although this course is very hard it will all be worth it in the end :D

    Hi Sarah,

I’m really enjoying your blog. Like you I started a course that I didn’t enjoy and left after 18 months. Now at the grand age of 21 I am about to start the BNURS Mental Health Nursing degree at University of Manchester.

I am so happy that I’ve found this blog as your posts are so informative and reassuring. I’ve just moved over to Manchester last week and cannot wait until next week’s start of term!!

Good luck in your third year!

Hey Anna, thank you so much for your comment, I’m so glad you’re happy with my blog and hope you find it useful. Well done on your big decision to leave your last course – it’s such a hard choice to make and I was really worried that I’d end up leaving one uni course only to find I couldn’t get on another, especially nursing. So congratulations!
I can’t wait to start term next week either, can’t wait to get stuck in again :D
Hope you’re settling in to rainy Manchester well? Are you in student halls? Good luck to you too for first year!

      Sarah X

PS – quick tip; bring something warm with you on Monday like a thick jumper or a hoodie you can take off, those lecture theatres can get really cold!

        Hi Sarah,

The decision was definately a big one. I had depression and anxiety at Uni, but I faced it, left Uni, got a job and recovered, and now I want to help others with MH issues.

I think I’m settling in okay, I’m only 50 mins away from home so not too far. And my boyfriend lives really close too. Yes definately RAINY Manchester, that’s all it’s done since I arrived! I’m in private halls near the hospitals, I’m sharing with two girls but they haven’t arrived yet.

Thank you for the tip, I’m going to dress in layers!!

    Hi Sarah,
I understand how busy third year can be but from reading your blog im sure you can take it in your stride. I qualified middle of last year and am just getting used to the fact that where i am working isn’t a placement! Still managing to enjoy it though.

Point of my ramblings good luck with everything :D

Hello! Thank you for your comment :)
Congratulations on qualifying – it’s such a weird thought knowing that in August I’ll be saying that myself. I’m scared! Did you find yourself feeling really lost when you started your job? Did the other nurses help you? Glad you’re managing to enjoy it, do you work on a ward?
Thank you for the good luck wish, just over 16 weeks to go and I’ve finished :D
